How to prepare for your family session outfits:

ITS BEST TO PLAN YOUR OUTFITS IN ADVANCE SO YOU ARENT STRESSING AT THE LAST MINUTE!

Please, don't wear matching outfits! Its an unspoken rule!

Here are my tips:

1. STICK TO EARTHY & NATURAL COLORS. THESE COLORS GO BEST WITH ALMOST EVERYTHING ESPECIALLY IN A NATURE SETTING.

eg. Beige, brown, cream, orange tones. or Beige, brown, cream, sage green tones or 1 Pattern, Beige, brown, cream. These are just examples. Looking through my work will give you an idea of the colours I like to use.

THINK ABOUT COLORS THAT COMPLIMENT EACH OTHER. KEEP IT SIMPLE.

2. BE COMFORTABLE - MAKE SURE YOU’VE TRIED ON YOUR CLOTHES BEFORE HAND AND MOVED AROUND IN THEM COMFORTABLY. YOU DON’T WANT TO BE CONSTANTLY ADJUSTING ANYTHING! YOU WANT TO BE ABLE TO MOVE AROUND FREELY AND FEEL GOOD. USUALLY I WILL TELL YOU TO DITCH THE SHOES!

3. FLOWY MAXI DRESSES WORK BEAUTIFULLY ON WOMEN AND GIRLS, EVEN IF YOU ARE NOT USUALLY A MAXI DRESS KIND OF PERSON - THEY SHOW MOTION AND MOVE WITH YOU AS OPPOSED TO STAYING RIGID WHICH PHOTOGRAPHS REALLY BEAUTIFULLY. MAXI DRESSES ALSO WORK GREAT WITH LITTLE KIDS, THERE ARE SO MANY PROMPTS I CAN USE WITH KIDS PLAYING IN THE SKIRT OF MUMS DRESS, OR EVEN USING IT AS A BIT OF A BLANKET TO SIT ON :)

4. THIS IS AN UNSPOKEN RULE, NO LOGOS OR WORDS - STAY TIMELESS BY AVOIDING WORDS AND LOGOS THAT WILL DATE THE IMAGES AND JUST LOOK TACKY.

IT IS A GREAT IDEA TO MAKE SURE THE KIDS HAVE BEEN FED PRIOR TO THE SESSION TO MAKE SURE THEY ARE IN A GOOD MOOD, BRING SOME SNACKS FOR THE CAR IF YOU HAVE TO TRAVEL FAR :)

These earthy tones all work beautifully together! Use this pallet as inspiration when piecing your family outfits together.

Layering pieces of clothing and using different textures can make a whole difference too!

Make it fun for the kids

A great way to capture real emotion is to include activities into the session. This will keep the kids from feeling bored and it will make the session more unique and fun for everyone. I don't like to do many "sit and look at the camera" photos. I like to capture emotions and beautiful moments during activities. For example I might get the kids to chase Mum or Dad around, this will get natural laughing photos. I might get Mum to have a quiet moment with Bub and snuggle in, and that treats a beautiful image too. I don't have any rules or a list of images I want to get, I just go with the flow and go with my gut on what I think we should do next.

The whole session is guided by me and full of prompts and ideas to keep you busy! You wont be wondering what to do & there will be no awkward moments!
